Update from Summer Camp:
6:09pm Saturday July 22: Update: According to the Continental Airlines website, flight 1098 is in flight and is expected to arrive in Houston at 7:56pm, nearly 15 minutes earlier than scheduled.
Latest update from Mr. Knierien (12:10pm Saturday): The troop left camp on the bus at 10:00am (11:00am CDT) Saturday. They're looking for a place to have lunch. Then they'll head to the Denver airport. Everyone is fine.
Parents: Meet your scout in the baggage claim area in terminal C at Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport shortly after 8:00pm Saturday evening, July 22. They're arriving on Continental flight 1098 from Denver.
Parents: Be sure that your scout notifies Mr. Knierien and gets checked off his list before leaving the Houston airport Saturday night!!!
Thursday, July 20, 10:17am CDT: Mr. John Curtis phoned and said that all the scouts are doing great. They'll finish their merit badge work today and many will go white-water rafting tomorrow. The weather has been great. They've had a little rain every day, at about the same time every day, cleaning everything up. The nights have been cool and comfortable for sleeping, probably 45-50 degrees. The days have been 80-85 degrees. They're all having a good time and getting a lot of good training. Many of the scouts will have an overnight campout tonight.
Monday, July 17, 10:22am CDT: Mr. John Curtis phoned and said that everyone arrived safely at camp Sunday afternoon, around 5:00pm Mountain time (6:00pm Central time). The bus was about an hour and a half late at the airport in Denver, so they arrived at camp later than expected, and were busy getting situated last night. There was a campfire. The weather was cool and pleasant last night, and it looks like it will be hot and dry today. All the boys are drinking a lot of water. Everyone is doing fine and no one has had to go to the infirmary. In a day or so, they should all be well-acclimated to the altitude. The base-camp scouts have gone off to their first merit badge classes this morning.
This year we have selected Ben Delatour Boy Scout Camp north of Fort Collins, Colorado, as our summer camp 2006 destination, Sunday July 16 thru Saturday July 22.
Arrive at Terminal E (not terminal C, as previously stated) two hrs prior to planned departure (not 1.5 hours, as previously stated) ---that is, arrive by 7:10am on Sunday, July 16, for the 9:10am departure. (So you should plan to leave the Sugar Land area by 6:10am or so; it's about an hour's drive to the airport from here.) There will be an assistant scoutmaster at the curbside drop off to assist scouts if the parent wants to drop off and then park.
Our flights between Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport and Denver International Airport:
| Date | Flight | Leave | Arrive |
| Sunday 16 July 2006 | Continental 799 | Houston 9:10am | Denver 10:33am |
| Saturday 22 July 2006 | Continental 1098 | Denver 4:38pm | Houston 8:01pm |
(Mail sent from home later than Tuesday will probably not arrive until the unit departs from camp on Saturday!)

Food and other smellables in camp:
NO FOOD WILL BE ALLOWED IN THE CAMPSITE! We will be in the last campsite (Pinecroft) and will be farthest from the dining hall and closest to nature. We don’t want any uninvited visitors at night. For those boys receiving care packages, please consume/share all food before the end of the day. We will have to empty all garbage cans every night and make sure that all food has been properly disposed.
SMELLABLES NEED SPECIAL STORAGE: Please pack any thing with a fragrance (shave cream, after shave, mouthwash and toothpaste in a freezer zipper bag (Ziploc or Glad). The smellables need to be placed in zipper bags in the campers pack or duffle and the gear will be placed under the dining fly away from the tents. Campers will be allowed to have sleeping gear, a flashlight and the next day’s change of clothes in their tents. This sounds kind of severe, but it will keep us out of trouble.
Mrs. Bourgeois says (July 10):

Mrs. Bourgeois says (June 29):
Mr. Collins still requires a large number of Longs Peak Council BSA Medical Records Class 1 and 3 (click here:Medical form (pdf)) from both scouts and adults. Please get them directly into Mr. Collins' hands or Mrs. Bourgeois will collect them at July 10th troop meeting since he will be unavailable.
Mr. Niel Morgan says (June 27):
The links below contain pictures from Troop 373’s (Denver , Colorado) Summer 2003 adventure, Troop 25’s (Lincoln, Nebraska) Summer 2004 adventure and Troop 479’s (Houston, Texas) Summer 2004 adventure at Ben Delatour Scout Ranch. The pictures provide a great view of the terrain, pictures of the sleeping arrangements (platforms, tents and cots) as well as the activities that will be available to us:

Make sure that scout can CARRY EVERYTHING over rugged terrain.
Prepare the boys to drink between 3-5 liters (12 – 20 cups or 96 – 160 ounces) of water each day. The best way to insure that they drink water is to equip them with a nalgene water bottle to carry with their daypack or even better a camelbak hydration system to put in their day pack. Nalgene bottles and hydration equipment can be purchased at Target, Academy, Sports Authority, Gander Mountain and REI. See camelbak for more information. We have enough adults at base camp (9 adults for 17 boys) to make sure that the boys have their water each day and are drinking.
Refrain from drinking carbonated drinks one week before camp. Carbonated drinks have carbohydrates which decrease the amount of water absorbed by our bodies and they fill you up before you can get properly hydrated.
Information from Mrs. Bourgeois about cots for summer camp (May 18).
Baggage for Summer Camp: read about the packing limitations (Word document) when flying Continental Airlines for summer camp. (Note: the financial penalties quoted for excess baggage apply for each one-way trip, so double the numbers given.)
The travel cost has been set at $302.10. (This includes airfare of $231.10, ground transportation in Colorado of $51, and food cost of $20.) Please write a check to "BSA Troop 828" and give it to Mrs. Spera at the next Troop meeting.
Reminder: Everyone going to summer camp must get a physical exam and have this Medical form (pdf) signed by a physician. Turn it in to Mr. Collins by the end of May. This is the only medical form acceptable to the camp. Do not use the standard BSA medical form---use this one.
April 24 deadline: Merit Badge Selection Form (pdf) should be filled out and returned to Mr. Rankin.
Every Saturday morning, 7:00am: conditioning hike starting at the Commonwealth Elementary School parking lot, for scouts planning to go on a high-adventure trek at summer camp.

Posted March 8: Very important Health & Safety Information for Summer Camp. Read this and protect yourself from mosquitoes, bears, mountain lions, lightning, dehydration, and other dangers!
At the parents' summer camp meeting on February 13, it was agreed that the troop will travel to summer camp by airplane, flying from Houston Intercontinental to Denver. Transportation from Denver to the camp is still under investigation. Estimated total transportation cost per person: $300 (this estimate is subject to change).
A deposit of $40 per person for transportation is required by February 20.
Mr. Aguirre has looked into the possibility of a whitewater rafting trip on Friday afternoon July 21. Here is his Feb 4 email about it:
> > I have
found a whitewater outfit, Rocky Mountain Adventures, that can pick
> us up from camp (at no additional cost), for a half day
rafting trip on the
> Lower Cache La Poudre River. Their rafting cost is :
> >
> > $41 7- 12 yrs
> > $46 13 and older
> >
> > If we get a group of 10-14, they offer a 5% discount, and if over 15 are
> interested, they will give us a 10% discount.
> > The half day trip is from 12:30 pm - 3:35 pm, and with the fact that we
> don't need to worry about driving, it's not a bad
deal. At this time, there
> are slots available for Friday the 21'st, but
obviously we need to get a
> total count to make a reservation.
