Itinerary and Instructions for Summer Camp 2004
Saturday, June 12, 4:00-6:00pm: We will pre-pack the trailer. Bring your gear anytime between 4:00 and 6:00pm, to be packed in the trailer. (Chisholm Trail campers are asked to bring their gear in the early part of the 4:00pm hour, so it can be packed on the trailer first.) You can drop it off and leave. The gear should include your clothing and personal items (in a duffel bag or pack), sleeping bag or blankets, pillow, and (optionally) a cot, a small 3-legged folding chair, personal fishing gear. Bring your signed consent and medication forms for summer camp.
Sunday, June 13, 6:00am: Arrive at the church. Eat a good breakfast before arriving, or bring a carry-on breakfast to eat on the bus. Bring a day-pack with personal items for use on the bus. Books are good. A small pillow is okay. Water bottles are okay on the bus. Do not bring food (other than a carry-on breakfast)! Snacks and drinks will be provided by the troop during the bus trip. No food is allowed in personal gear or on your person or in your tent; you do not want animals attracted to your tent!
Electronics: You may bring video games, radios, and CDs and CD players for use on the bus only. These must have headphones. You may also bring videos (DVDs or VHS tapes) for possible viewing on the bus's video system. These should be rated G, PG, or PG-13. If you'd like to bring videos to be shown on the bus, please send email to Mr.Knierien listing the videos that you would like to bring; they will be reviewed for suitability. Do not bring personal DVD players. All electronic items will be collected when we arrive at camp and stored by the troop during the week at camp. Bring a Ziploc bag with the scout's name on it to hold the electronic items. Bring personal electronics at your own risk: the troop IS NOT responsible for personal electronics – either on the bus or while being held at camp.
Money: Each scout should bring some personal money to be used at camp for buying snacks, souvenirs, craft items needed for certain merit badges (see the merit badge pamphlets), ammunition, etc. Perhaps $5/day should suffice for snacks and souvenirs. Each scout can hold his own money, or, if the parents desire, the troop will designate an adult to hold all or part of his money and dole it out as needed. Any money to be held by an adult on behalf of a scout should be placed in an envelope labeled with the scout's name and the amount of money. Do not bring any bills larger than $20.
Medicines: Bring medicines in their original containers. Pack them all in a Ziploc bag, labeled with the scout's name and Troop 828. Write explicit directions for each medicine: when to be taken and in what quantity. Parents: write and sign a note giving the camp health officer permission to administer the medicines. All medicines will be held by the camp infirmary. Here is what the camp instructions say about medicines:
2. All prescription medication must come to camp in the original bottle from the pharmacy. The label must contain:
a. The camper’s name
b. Date of prescription
c. Doctor's name and phone number
d. Correct Dosage
No handwriting will be allowed on prescription medication bottles.
3. All over the counter medication must come to camp in the original container.
4. All prescriptions and over the counter medications are to be brought to the health lodge when taking camp tour for proper storage (refrigeration) and supervision. The Camp Health and Safety Director is to be instructed as to medication schedules. It is suggested that the troop designate an adult to ensure the Scout takes his medication properly. All prescription drugs are to be kept locked. Daily medical supplies (such as inhalers, allergy kits, etc.) should be carried by the person needing them.
5. All medication will be accompanied by a note from a parent or legal guardian giving permission for the medication to be administered by the health officer at camp.
Packing list: See the list provided by the camp (go to page 9 of the following PDF document): http://www.longhorncouncil.org/summercamp/leader_info_packets/sr2_2004_leaders_guide.pdf
Miscellaneous tips:
1. Cots can be rented for $5 for the week, or you can bring your own. If you plan to rent one, you must let Mr. Rankin know by Thursday, June 10.
2. Mosquito netting and repellant may be a good idea.
3. Bring suntan lotion (SPF 30 or higher). Use it.
4. It has been raining hard up there; bring a poncho.
5. Troop T-shirts and hats will be available for purchase and pick-up Saturday 4:00-6:00pm.
6. Bring T-shirts that are scout-related if possible. No inappropriate words or pictures on T-shirts are allowed.
7. Meals on the bus are included in the fees you've paid.
8. Bring your Class-A uniform shirt---wear it on the bus on Sunday. Do not bring the troop neckerchief.
9. Do bring: a day-pack, your scout handbook, notebook, pen or pencil, merit badge pamphlets, a water bottle, bathing suits. (You should make a copy of the rank advancement pages of the scout handbook to keep safely at home, in case the handbook gets lost.)
10. Other items you might want to bring: trash bags or large Ziplocs (for dirty clothes, wet clothes); Desenex or equivalent in case of athlete's foot; Chapstick or equivalent lip balm; pool/shower shoes (shower in these to avoid athlete's foot); extra batteries for flashlight and for personal electronic items; a clothes line and clothes pins to dry wet towels and clothes. Patrols should bring their patrol flag.
11. Parents: read the troop discipline policy and discuss it with your scout.
12. Remember: If you want it back, label it with scout's name and "Troop 828". Fingernail polish or a silver-colored Sharpie marker can be used to mark black materials.
Saturday, June 19, approximately 7:00pm or 8:00pm: The troop returns by bus to the parking lot of the church. We will have had a late lunch (around 2:00pm) and some snacks, but will not have had the evening meal. Plan to feed your hungry scout a late dinner.
