After the successful completion of the inaugural running of the new 1.5 mile orienteering course at Brazos Bend State Park, this crew of weary scouts paused for a photo.  In addition, these scouts completed first aid, lashing, knots, toten chit, and portions of fireman chit.

Congratulations all.

Mr. Harbin says (May 11):

Subject: FW: First class skills day May 15 at Brazos Bend State Park

Further to Dwayne's note, this is still a Viper and Buffalo Patrol
members event, with the specific aim of getting these Scouts' immediate
advancement needs addressed.  There may be a couple of older Scouts who
join in as they still have the First Class orienteering requirement
need.

The announcement last night of an 8 a.m. gathering time at the church
hall still applies as does the return no later than 7:30 p.m.  Departure
Saturday morning will be no later than 8:20.  If you arrive later, just
plan on driving down to Brazos Bend and join us there.  Dwayne will give
us an update on a reserved site shortly.  The url for Brazos Bend State
Park is http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/park/brazos/.  The park map and
driving directions are on that site.

As to what to bring, reference the list in Dwayne's note below.  Add to
that your Scout Handbook, pencil and paper, hat, Class B uniform (Scout
shorts and t-shirt), and water bottle or canteen.

On our agenda will be:

Tenderfoot and Second Class knots
Tenderfoot First Aid
Knife, axe and saw use, sharpening, and safety (Totin' Chip) Gathering
tinder and kindling (beyond that which the Buffalos previously collected
at a prior patrol meeting Fire starting Propane stove use, lighting, and
safety After lunch Orienteering (First Class requirement) Identification
of  ten animals and ten plants (for the Scouts who don't have this yet)
during orienteering Identification of poisonous plants during
orienteering Free time at about 3:30 p.m. - fishing  (bring your fishing
pole and bait) Start dinner at 5:15 p.m. Depart for home at 6:30 p.m.

We'll set up stations in the morning with various adult leaders and
older Scouts assisting.  Scouts may choose as they have needs.  We'll do
other Tenderfoot requirements as requested.

I know there are a couple of Scouts who need to leave by 11:30 as will a
couple of others by 3 p.m.  That's fine, just let me know in your
participation response whether you will attend or not, as well as any
early departure plans by Wednesday.

We also need to know which adults will be going and who needs
transportation.

...

Adults should also plan their food arrangements same as the Scouts.
We'll prepare kool aid (bug juice) for the group and have a propane
stove available too if you want to do something beyond a sack lunch and
silver turtles.

Any questions or missing information, please advise.

Yours in Scouting,

Charlie Harbin
ASM for the Buffalo Patrol

Subject: First class skills day May 15 at Brazos Bend State Park

Meet at St. Lawrence at 7:50 am.
Return to St. Lawrence after supper (7:00 pm)
Cost: Nothing

We will be doing a bunch of tenderfoot, second class and first class
requirements.  Specifically we will be doing orienteering immediately
after lunch.

Bring: Permission Form (Word document), Fork or spoon, cup, Silver turtle for
supper (see the attached web link for instructions), sack lunch,
jack-knife, and compass, sunscreen and bug repellant.  A small chair
might come in handy.

Does anyone have the seasons pass to the state parks?

If you are not a first year scout (Member of Vipers or Buffalos), and
want to come, please email me so that we will have enough supplies for
the orienteering activity.
