DOUBLE-H (HIGH ADVENTURE)
By: Jory D.
After sitting on the runway for an hour our crew was finally in the air to Albuquerque, New Mexico. When we arrived a van service picked us up and drove us to Socorro where we spent the night. We then awoke early the next morning when the van took us another hour to the Double-H Ranch.
We listened to our orientation and then left on the trail. Each day we woke up at 5:30am and hiked for about an hour till we stopped for our trail breakfast. On the second day after arriving, we had our CONS project (conservation project). The project was to build small dams along the streambed to slow down the water flow and slow down erosion. The third day we arrived at Martin Ranch where we shot black powder rifles. At night the rangers cooked us dinner and put on a music concert for us. On the last full day at camp we had some free time so we built a balance beam course and we were seeing who could make it through the fastest. When it was Mr. Kunnemann’s turn, he made it about halfway through when the course collapsed and he fell flat on his back. Everyday we hiked the same routine except on the day we were to leave for home. That morning we woke-up at 4:30am and hiked to the pick-up point. We then got back to base camp where we showered and got ready for the return trip home.
This experience was a four star hiking experience and if you like to hike, this is the program for you!
