Canoeing Merit Badge Day
by Ron Spahr
Assistant Scoutmaster
Canoe Merit Badge Day was a fantastic success. With 17 boys in attendance on a sunny and warm May Day, Troop 828 set out to master the art of tandem steering, solo canoeing, swamping a canoe and rescuing the swamped canoe. Once the instructors were through with discussing; water safety, parts of a canoe and paddle, the various strokes and proper care of their equipment, the scouts were ready to practice their new skills.
All parts of the canoeing merit badge were completed over the course of the day, with the exception of requirement 2 (Demonstrating CPR) which will have to be completed with a certified CPR instructor.
Thank you goes out to the following boys that assisted in putting on the Canoeing Merit Badge. They are: Life Scout; Michael C., Star Scouts; Cody M. and Dan S., and First Class Scout; Dillon C. Additionally, my gratitude goes out to Mr. Duane Culp, Lee Mendoza and Dan Clark for their time, experience and their support.
This will be an all-day session Saturday, May 17, 8:30am-4:30pm, at the lake at the First Colony Aquatic Center. You can complete nearly all (or possibly all) of the requirements for the Canoeing Merit Badge.
