New First Class Rank Requirement
Beginning January 1, 2006, an additional requirement will be added to the requirements for First Class rank in Boy Scouting. Scouts beginning their First Class requirement work after this date must complete the new requirement. Scouts working on First Class requirements prior to this date will have until June 30, 2006 to compete First Class rank without completing the new requirement.
The new requirement tests the candidate's persuasive communications skills and can help make Scouting available to more boys. It reads as follows:
"Tell someone who is eligible
to join Boy Scouts, or an inactive Boy Scout, about your troop's activities.
Invite him to a troop outing,
activity, service project, or meeting.
Tell him how to join, or
encourage the inactive Boy Scout to become active."
The Boy Scout Handbook and 2006 Requirements book will be updated with this new detail.
Good Turn
for America
Looking for service hours?
Trying to seek out how you can make a difference in our community? Interested
in researching service project ideas? Interested in answering the BOR question
with a resounding “YES, I did my good turn today!”
What is a Good Turn?
Some Good Turns are big—saving a life, helping out
after floods or other disasters, recycling community trash, working with others
on conservation projects. But Good Turns are often small, thoughtful
acts—helping a child cross a busy street, going to the store for an elderly
neighbor, cutting back brush that is blocking a sign, doing something special
for a brother or sister, welcoming a new student to your school.
What is Good Turn for
America? Good Turn for America is a
national call to service by the Boy Scouts of America to address the issues of
hunger, homelessness, and poor health in our nation year-around. Good Turn for
America is collaboration with The Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, American
Red Cross, and thousands of other community organizations that focuses the power
of volunteerism on these important community issues. For more information on

KEEP THOSE CARDS. Whenever you get a card with your rank advancement and merit badges, it is very important that you keep these for your record. If you accidentally lose a badge or move, this may be your only way to prove that you have earned these. The troop keeps a record, but the council does not keep individual records.
The best way to keep these cards is to place them in plastic sleeves like the ones used for baseball cards. You can get these sleeves at Baseball Fever (better quality) or Wal-Mart.
WANT TO FIND OUT HOW TO EARN MERIT BADGES? Our troop has merit badge counselors who will help you earn merit badges; see the list of our troop's merit badge counselors here. Also, there are many organizations that offer opportunities to earn merit badges in the Houston area; see a list of many merit badge opportunities here.
